INN From the Cold

IMG_8011.jpgThe need for an emergency homeless shelter in Newmarket was identified in the spring of 2004 by a group of caring and dedicated Town residents. Through the hard work of volunteers, by December 2004, a shelter was temporarily established in the Newmarket Community Church. In its first year, the shelter offered the homeless limited food services, clothing, and a safe place to rest.

Between 2005 and 2007, IFTC relocated to Trinity United Church, and was open 4 nights per week, plus any nights when the temperature dropped below -15C. Food and clothing services were expanded and guests were offered the use of showers.

In the fall of 2007, IFTC moved to its current home at 510 Pemrose Street in Newmarket. With an appetite for destruction and a need to offer guests a greater variety of services, IFTC undertook major renovations in order to provide office space for other organizations that could provide the homeless with housing, employment, and addiction services.

It was during this period that the Inn became more than just an emergency shelter. It was now a one-stop-shop hub of services that strived to address the various needs of the homeless and at risk populations.

Today, IFTC is a shelter like no other in York Region. The Inn’s building at 510 Pemrose St. now houses the Newmarket Food Pantry, the York Region Food Network, the LOFT/Crosslinks Street Outreach Services and the York Region Alliance to End Homelessness. The Inn also welcomes in the Housing Help Centre, the ID Clinic, Canadian Mental Health Association, and Addiction Services of York Region on an as needed basis.

In late November 2009, IFTC also began a weekly Friday Night Community Meal open to all members of the public. The success of the Community Meal has been outstanding, as it regularly hosts 100 guests each week and has served over 3500 meals to date.
